Let Us Bake. Let us Earn. Let Us Thrive.
We are the Michigan Cottage Food Coalition—a growing, grassroots effort made up of bakers, jam makers, candy crafters, and home kitchen creators from every corner of the state.
Some of us bake from scratch with our kids at our side. Others stir jam pots before the sun comes up. Many of us don’t have storefronts. We don’t want them.
We want something simpler, something real: to share our food, face-to-face, with the communities we love.
The Problem
Right now, Michigan’s cottage food law caps our annual income at $25,000—no matter how safe we are, how strong the demand, or how much heart we pour into every batch.
That number? It’s not based on science.
Not on safety.
Not on quality.
It’s arbitrary.
It’s outdated.
And it stalls real progress, cutting off opportunity just when these businesses are finding their stride.
What We’re Fighting For
We’re not asking for handouts or special favors.
We’re asking for the freedom to grow.
We’re calling on lawmakers to:
- Pass HB 4122 — a first step toward a fairer law
- Raise the cap — and eventually remove it completely
- Implement fair, affordable registration
- Require Certified Food Manager training for committed, beyond-hobby producers
Where We Stand Now
We reached out to key members of the House Agriculture Committee. They heard us.
We just received word: HB 4122 will be voted out of committee on April 17th.
This is big. But it’s only the beginning.
We need more voices. More names. More stories.
And we need you with us.

Cottage food is personal. It’s people-first. It’s Michigan at its best.
Let’s protect it.
Let’s expand it.
Let’s build something that lasts.
